even though he's been back from new orleans for over a week, the two postcards that my boyfriend sent me arrived only yesterday. i must be rubbing off on him at least a little, because look at which ones he chose. not exactly your typical brightly colored, cheesy postcards, are they? they're called miniARTures, a sorbet-colored photo of your vacation spot (they're only available for new orleans, st. augustine, and key west) with a little white paper frame around it. said frame is sturdy enough; aside from the usual post grime, these held up pretty well. $2.50 each
we love old stuff: old pictures, old postcards...old picture postcards. we got a kick out of this one of our dear ol' alma matter. do you have any old picture postcards that you love? where or how did you get them?

We were completely enchanted by the concept of postcrossing from the moment we heard about it. We can't believe it took us a whole 48 hours to sign up and send some of these little beauties out. Ideally you're supposed to send a postcard, but we didn't have any of New York on hand, so we just used some flats (goodness knows we've got enough).
These puppies headed out today and are on their way to Finland, China and Spain. Postcrossing isn't a penpal service, though we encouraged our recipients to write back if they wanted. Otherwise, we should be getting a card from someone completely different. Updates to come as the situation develops!
we got an email last week from one of our favorite readers, donovan beeson. She wanted to tell us about the great japanese postcards she got on ebay (pictured below). they're awesome and maybe we can get dov to divulge the username or url of where she got hers. we plugged "japanese postcards" into the ebay search and found some impressive offerings, but not these specific ones.
The real newsmaker, though, we found on donovan's website: these awesome mailing labels that are, put down your english breakfast, completely free! the file, which can be downloaded direct from dov's site, contains 6 labels which we imagine you could print on sticker paper. Or, if your low-fi like us, just use a damn glue stick. 
If we had our act together, this is something we would have wanted to do ourselves. Lucky for us, Paulo Magalhães has it together because he created Postcrossing a "project that allows anyone to receive postcards (paper ones, not electronic) from random places in the world." The map above shows the last 500 postcards and where they've traveled.

Along with our love of correspondence, comes a love of postcards. Sometimes a letter is just too long to write.
So we find ourselves buying tons of postcard books, some to keep for the art and some to send to those special few. Here are a few from Chronicle Books that we really love. And coincidentally they all feature Japanese artists, so we guess this is the Japanese edition...
